Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Why do my petunia flowers look like they have melted?
A: Usually this happens because they have been rained upon. After a few days of dry weather they will re-bloom and be as beautiful as ever. If its not been raining, but it has been cool, you might be over-watering, which can give the flowers a slightly watery appearance.
Q: Why are there holes in my produce greens?
A: Holes in the leaves of greens are often caused by flea beetles. Flea beetles are very small beetles that eat small, shotgun pattern holes in leaves of greens, especially radishes and beets.
Q: How long will my produce last in my fridge?
Vegetables will generally last up to a week in your fridge.
Fruit, including tomatoes, are picked ripe. They are ready to be eaten when you buy them, or maybe the next day. After more than a day or two they rapidly begin to deteriorate. Tomatoes have a slightly longer shelf life of 3-4 days.
Q: How much do I need to clean my produce before eating it?
A: Many of our vegetables are picked from the field and not washed. They may have some dirt on them, but it is just the natural dirt from the field that they are exposed to while they grow. Food that will be eaten raw, especially lettuce and other greens should be washed before eating.
Q: Do you take SNAP or FDNP?
A: We take FDNP and SNAP. FDNP checks (also sometimes called WIC checks) are green and worth $4.00 each. FDNP checks can only be used to buy fresh fruits, vegetables, or cut herbs.
Q: My tomato plants are getting big. How should I take care of them?
A: Tomato cages are a popular solution. They go around a tomato and keep it contained in one area. This only really works if you put the cage around the tomato when it is fairly small. If you’re looking for a more intricate tomato support structure, there are a couple of ways you can trellis them. We have always used guidance from one of the companies we get seeds from. There’s no point in re-inventing the wheel, so we will just put links below.
